My name is Jeffrey Balsz; I am the California Attorney that owns this site. I started this site specifically to provide low-cost Trust and Estate planning within the San Gabriel valley. My background: I attended University of Berkeley, California. While a student, I worked part-time at IPX, a § 1031 Exchange company (tax deferred exchanges for like-kind investment property). This was my first exposure to the Tax Code, and I fell in love.
After Berkeley, I received a scholarship for Lewis and Clarke Law School (in Portland, OR). Their tax program was amazing—I was able to take Income Tax, Partnership Tax, Corporate Tax, Advanced Corporate Tax, Corporate Reorganizations, Taxation of International Transactions, Valuation (for tax purposes), and Estate and Gift Tax. I graduated Cum Laude.
Since I still had more to learn, I wanted to continue my education at my own expense, rather than at the expense of my first clients. I attended University of San Diego’s LL.M. program (a terminal degree after the J.D.), focusing in Taxation. I studied Tax Treaties, Tax Research, State and Local Tax, Current Issues in Corporate Tax, Taxation of Non-profit Companies, and Wills and Trust Drafting. I also interned at the Low Income Tax Clinic in Portland.
While studying for my LL.M., I passed the California Bar (on my first try), and was admitted. I worked in the Resolution industry for a few years—helping taxpayers settle debts owed to the IRS and California. Eventually, I quite, and started my private practice. I have the pleasure of focusing almost exclusively on tax matters; international transactions, partnership formation/operation, tax compliance, some criminal tax-matters, audits, ethics compliance for practitioners, offers in compromise, etc.
